Students and parents may meet with a school counselor for a variety of reasons. Parents contact the counselor to learn more about parenting skills, to improve family relationships, to obtain information about outside agencies, or to gain support and understanding. Children seek help from the counselor to improve peer-relations, to express feelings, to feel good about school, to solve problems, to change inappropriate behavior, to deal with difficult life events, and to discuss academics.
The elementary counseling program is preventative in nature and intended to provide skills that will enable children to develop character and make good decisions. Students may request help from the counselor by filling out a request to see the counselor or by asking their teacher or the counselor. An administrator, teacher or parent may also refer a student.
